Mission & History

Our new mission statement—George Walton Academy challenges students to excel in academics, athletics and the arts and to build character, leadership and curiosity—is at the heart of our commitment to excellence.

We strive to be the independent school leader in our region. This isn't just about what we teach, but how we shape our students. We challenge each individual student to achieve their unique full potential. Our values guide this process:

  • Excellence: We challenge each individual student to achieve their unique full potential.

  • Faith: We embody Christian principles that inspire service and purpose, while welcoming and respecting families of all faiths and backgrounds.

  • Respect: We build character by promoting a culture of kindness, humility, honesty, accountability, and community.

  • Engagement: We broaden perspectives through immersive experiences in the classroom, extracurricular opportunities, and international travel.

  • Perseverance: We encourage resilience, determination, and a growth mindset.

Together, our mission, vision, and values create an environment where students are not only prepared for the future, but are also equipped to lead lives of purpose and integrity.

For over 55 years, George Walton Academy has inspired and equipped students to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Founded in 1969, George Walton Academy began with roots in Good Hope, Georgia. During the first year, GWA welcomed 132 students in the first through eighth grade. The students met and selected the Bulldogs as the school mascot along with the school colors of red and black. They also chose a school motto of Vires Acquirit Eundo, which means “It gains strength by continuing.” The school was built on the vision of its twelve founders, who worked tirelessly toward the goal of quality education in a college-preparatory environment.

As founding board member George Hearn, III stated in a letter to students upon completion of their first year,

"We have here in George Walton Academy an institution dedicated to the highest of educational and spiritual principles in an environment that stresses such virtues as respect, patriotism, courtesy and self-discipline."

As the oldest and most established private school in Walton County,  GWA has grown from its small beginnings to offer thriving academic, arts, athletic, and international travel programs. Today, we continue to honor the past while inspiring the future, preparing students not only for college and careers but also to make a meaningful difference in the world. We are dedicated to a welcoming and inclusive community where students feel safe to explore their interests and talents. At GWA, we are truly rooted in tradition, but always moving forward into the future.
