George Walton Academy believes in educating the whole child – socially, emotionally and academically. Our kindergarten program takes a hands-on/minds-on approach to learning that is student-centered. We work at different levels of instruction – whole group, small groups, partners and individually. Sharing, patience, kindness and being thoughtful of others is emphasized. Students feel safe, secure and happy. Making friends and learning how to work and play together is important. Kindergarteners are also given the opportunity to work with older peers in our “Reading Buddies” program. These older elementary students mentor and guide our little ones. Students are exposed to a variety of settings in which they achieve success both socially and academically.
George Walton Academy believes in actively engaging children in the learning process. This fact can be seen in our learning centers. K5 students begin the year reviewing letters and letter sounds taught in K4. During the first few weeks, it’s common to see children spelling their names with letter tiles, practicing handwriting with shaving cream and Play-doh and playing letter recognition/phonological awareness games with sidewalk chalk. Math manipulatives and other hand-on learning centers are frequently used for both reading & math skills.
Throughout the year, K5 students progress from oral literacy to written literacy though the use of guided reading, word building and shared writing. Children begin the year learning about the concepts of print. At the end of the year, they are able to write in a variety of styles. Our K5 students are introduced to the Accelerated Reader Program which encourages students to explore individual choices for their reading selections. Kindergarten is a rich, building year at George Walton Academy.
GWA kindergarten students develop excellence in reading/language arts, math, science, social studies and health, in addition to extracurricular subjects. We follow and exceed the Georgia Performance Standards for Kindergarten and focus on a hands-on approach, instead of a worksheet-driven curriculum.
The curriculum is enhanced by weekly Bible, music, art, Spanish, computer and library periods with additional instructors in various school buildings. Field trips and visits from community professionals enhance and broaden classroom learning. The school day for K4 is 8:10 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., five days a week. The K5 program is a full day program with the school day beginning at 8:10 a.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m. After care is available until 6 p.m. Classes are small and each Kindergraten teacher is assisted by an aide.
