Director of Global, Culture and Peace Studies

George Walton Academy seeks a passionate, energetic professional to serve as the Director of Global, Cultural and Peace Studies for the 2021-2022 school year. Reporting to the Associate Head of School for Academics, the GCPS Director will oversee, develop, evaluate and promote GCPS programs and initiatives at the school.

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Global, Cultural and Peace Studies Diploma Distinction program, including course offerings and options, outside lectures and reading, experiential learning opportunities, travel, and more.

  • Manage international exchanges through partnerships currently established with schools in Spain, South Africa, and Russia, as well as anticipate, plan for and communicate future opportunities for global partnerships.

  • Plan and coordinate all domestic and international travel for upper school students.

  • Plan, coordinate and implement proper risk management strategies, including training chaperones on proper safety and security protocols.

  • Teach classes in the upper school humanities department and contribute to the cohesion, continuity and rigor of the humanities department.

  • Promote a methodology in the classroom and beyond that allows active and experiential discussion drawn from real-world activities; a caring and cooperative investigation of other cultures, countries, and groups; an open and inquisitive study of the realities and causes of poverty, inequality, and injustice; and a careful consideration of human impact on the environment.

  • Participate regularly in domestic and international travel with upper school students.

  • Partner proactively with faculty and administration to define curriculum that will ensure students expand their understanding of the global nature of our society and the power of having a global perspective.

  • Arrange workshops and speakers for the benefit of students and the wider community.

  • Liaise with local, national, and international organizations, developing relationships that result in opportunities for students to engage globally in study, service learning, and internship programs.

  • Present the GCPS mission and programs to all constituencies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Head of School for Academics and the Head of School.

Exceptional Candidates 
  • Demonstrate an approachable, consistent, transparent, supportive and good-humored posture.

  • Communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and individuals inside and outside the school.

  • Have experience with global curriculum design and implementation. 

  • Have experience coordinating international student travel and exchanges. 

  • Demonstrate fluency in at least one world language. 

  • Possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively. 

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of five years relevant experience required, including classroom teaching.

  • Previous experience as director of global programming preferred, including international travel.

  • Experience working with high school students.

  • Current knowledge of best practices in global learning, curriculum and competencies, as well as student travel and risk management.
